2023 Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship Application
Thank you for expressing interest in Horatio Alger Association scholarship programs! We would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to students interested in enrolling in Career and Technical Education programs for the Fall of 2023 to apply for the Horatio Alger Association Career & Technical Scholarship Program.
Since 1984, the Horatio Alger Association has awarded over $250 million in college scholarships to deserving students. Through nationally recognized educational programs, the Association reaches out directly to our nation's young people with a message of hope, opportunity, responsibility, and perseverance.

Building the Dream Scholarship
Know a high school senior planning to attend a two- or four-year college, or continuous education program in the fall? They may be eligible for a $10,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship from The Sallie Mae Fund and Thurgood Marshall College Fund. High school seniors who are US citizens or permanent residents and plan to enroll in an accredited post-secondary institution or continuous education program during the 2023-2024 academic year are eligible. Applicants must demonstrate leadership skills and moral character, as well as submit a short video describing how the scholarship will assist them in achieving their goals.

I wanted to share some scholarship information from the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama. The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama (serving Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, St. Clair, Randolph, and Talladega counties) is awarding over $350,000 during the 2023 Scholarship Season. Each scholarship has its own set of guidelines and eligibility requirements. Below is a list of currently available scholarships.

- Alabama Sports Officials Foundation Scholarship Individual students with a high school diploma who are seeking a technical training certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree from an institution located in the State of Alabama. A recipient must be a sports official who is currently affiliated with the Alabama High School Athletic Association, a child (natural or adopted), or grandchild of a sports official who is or has been affiliated with the Alabama High School Athletic Association for at least three annual registrations. A recipient must be in good standing at the current educational institution. - Alabama State University Anniston/Calhoun County Alumni Chapter Scholarship "Opportunity is Here" is the motto of Alabama State University. Established in 1867, Alabama State University is a historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama. - Harry M. and Edel Y. Ayers Scholarship is available to a student who is related to retired or current employees (parent or grandparent) of the Consolidated Publishing Company. The Hot Blast and The Star were the survivors of some 30 to 40 newspapers that sprang up in Anniston during the late 1800s. One writer of former days described the local journalistic struggle as a "fertile field of failures." The merging of The Hot Blast and The Star under the corporate title of Consolidated Publishing Company, Inc. (the "Company") in 1912 marked the beginning point of a successful newspaper. In appreciation of the service of past employees and the contributions of current employees, the Company has established the Harry M. and Edel Y. Ayers Scholarship Fund. - Audra Burger Memorial Scholarship is available to Family Saving Credit Union employees/retirees' children or grandchildren are eligible to apply for the scholarship without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin, or disability. - Dr. Clarence W. and Mrs. Juanita Harris Jairrels Scholarship is a gift to the graduating seniors of Seventeenth Street Missionary Baptist Church. In that Clarence and Juanita have been members of Seventeenth Street Missionary Baptist Church for more than fifty years, the Fund has been created to foster educational opportunities for graduates of the church. The Fund is designated for high school graduates who are members of Seventeenth Street Missionary Baptist Church. The Foundation will ensure that there is a meaningful pool of applicants each award cycle. If there is not an eligible pool of applicants from Seventeenth Street Missionary Baptist Church, those applications will be added to applicants from Anniston High School. - Nancy Julian Distinguished Young Woman Award is available to female graduating students from Calhoun County, Alabama. The Nancy Julian Distinguished Young Woman Award was established by the Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun, Inc., in 1996. It honors the memory of Nancy Julian, a very active member of our League and community. The award goes to an outstanding high school senior who has maintained an excellent academic record and has displayed a willingness to serve her school and community through volunteerism and extracurricular activities. - Joseph and Amelia Saks Scholarship is a gift to the students of Saks High School from Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Joseph "Hank" Saks in memory of his parents, Joseph and Amelia. In the early 1900s, Mr. Joseph Saks contributed the land and the structure for the original Saks High School. As a continuation of this legacy, Hank and Bette created this Fund to foster educational opportunities for students of Saks High School and to aid in their completion of higher education. - Leslie and Mary Ella Scales Scholarship is designated to the valedictorian at Anniston High School. The recipient may: (1) be a full-time or part-time enrolled student; (2) attend any accredited institution of higher learning in the United States; and (3) pursue any field of academic study or technical training. Dr. and Mrs. James S. Daniel established this scholarship fund in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Scales, Dr. Daniel's grandparents. Toole Scholarship Fund is available to individuals with a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) living within the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama service region (currently Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, St. Clair, Randolph, and Talladega counties), are eligible to apply for the scholarship without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin or disability. Nearly 70 scholarships are available to residents interested in attending one of Alabama’s community colleges to train for careers in the state’s automotive manufacturing industry. The scholarships are the result of a partnership between the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS).
Funding is available to award a total of $4,000 scholarships to students who are enrolled in a program at an Alabama community college that is associated with automotive manufacturing careers. Interested students with at least a 2.5 GPA can learn more information and apply directly through the website, dreamitdoitalabama.com/aama/. The deadline to apply is Monday, Nov. 7, 2022.
Students who are awarded the scholarship may use the funds for their spring, summer, or fall 2023 tuition, books, and fees associated with the approved program of study. A full submission for the scholarship requires the following: a completed application; completion of a new orientation course to the automotive industry and AAMA scholarship; one signed reference letter; an unofficial college or high school transcript; and a headshot photo.
Programs in which applicants can use the scholarship include the following: Mechatronics; Automated Manufacturing Technology; Industrial Electronics Technology; Industrial Maintenance Technology; Manufacturing Technology; Injection Molding; Machining/Machine Tool/CNC; Welding Technology; Automotive Service Technology; Engineering Technology; Mechanical Design Technology; Logistics.
